" Race and Resistance raises questions about the current project of Asian American studies that are essential considerations for the future development of the field."-- American Literature

Asian American literary critics are part of a broader class of Asian American intellectuals, broadly defined here to include academics, artists, activists, and political leaders. As an intellectual class, we share a certain set of assumptions about the object of our collective work, Asian America, and in Race and Resistance, I argue that this consensus can be seen through the work of Asian American literary critics, particularly in the theory of value that literary critics use to assess literature. These critics have been inclined to see Asian American literature as a body of texts that demonstrates opposition to, or accommodation with, the various kinds of oppression that Asian Americans have had to endure. Even as critics recognize that there are some, perhaps many, Asian American works that embody a politics of accommodation, or a tendency towards accommodation, these critics are still predisposed to read for resistance, to either look for and place value upon those works that embody this type of politics, or to emphasize the propensity towards opposition that may be found in ambivalent texts. Likewise, on a larger scale, Asian American intellectuals as a whole have tended to see Asian America as a place of resistance, and have not been capable of articulating a theoretical framework that can address Asian America’s ideological diversity and contradictions. In order for Asian American intellectual work to be more effective, it must be able to recognize the existence of this diversity within Asian America’s populations, and it must be able to anticipate the day when the current political consensus of Asian American intellectual work will end as this ideological heterogeneity makes itself manifest amongst the ranks of Asian American intellectuals themselves.

This divergence between theory and object, between the intellectual perception of Asian America and its actual multiplicity, constitutes a crisis of representation for Asian American studies and Asian American intellectuals as they seek to study, organize, and lead Asian America. In order for Asian American studies and Asian American intellectuals to address this crisis of representation, I argue that we need to re-evaluate some of our rigid theoretical assumptions about politics, race, and social change.
